The Man Against the Seawall

At dawn on 1 December 1948, a well-dressed man lay dead against the seawall at Somerton Beach, south of Adelaide. There was no weapon, no obvious injury and no identification.

Beachgoers had noticed him in the same position the previous evening. One saw him move an arm; others assumed he was asleep. By morning, the stranger had become the centre of an investigation with no name and no clear cause of death.

His clothes were carefully pressed, but several labels had been removed. His pockets contained only ordinary objects. Nothing explained who he was, why he had come to Somerton or what had happened during his final hours.

Then investigators found something that had been missed: a tiny roll of paper concealed deep inside his clothing. On it were two printed words—Tamám Shud: “finished” or “ended”.

The message sounded final. The case was only beginning.

Each discovery that followed appeared to draw the dead man into focus, only to open another question. Decades passed before modern science offered the possibility of restoring his identity. Whether it could explain his death was another matter.
