It was harvest time in medieval Suffolk when workers near Woolpit reportedly discovered two children at the edge of the fields. They were a boy and a girl, frightened and alone. Their clothes looked unfamiliar. No one could understand their speech. Stranger still, their skin was said to be green.
The villagers could see that the pair were human. Almost everything else resisted explanation. The children seemed unable to say who they were, why they had appeared beside the old pits or where the road home might lie. Before an answer became possible, the encounter took a darker turn.
Two medieval chroniclers preserved what happened next. Their accounts overlap in details too peculiar to dismiss, yet separate at crucial moments. Read together, they lead towards a country that no historian has been able to place securely on a map.
The central question: behind one of medieval England’s strangest stories, can we recover an encounter with two real displaced children — or has the surviving record preserved something that cannot now be reduced to ordinary history?
