Key Facts

  • Period: Prehistoric Ubaid; the illustrated late examples date broadly to the fifth–fourth millennia BCE.
  • Locations: Ur and other sites in southern Iraq; a related discovery at Bahra 1, Kuwait.
  • Objects: Small clay figures with elongated heads, oblique eyes and carefully marked bodies.
  • Surviving evidence: Excavated objects, museum records and archaeological publications.

The woman holds a child against her breast. Her arm curves beneath its body; the small head turns towards her. It is a scene that needs no translation, until the eye moves upwards to the mother’s face.

The head is long and narrow. The eyes rise sharply at either side. Above them, a dark covering climbs into a high, unfamiliar shape. Other figures from the ancient settlements of southern Iraq share something of the same appearance: slender bodies, marked shoulders and faces that have earned them an enduring modern name — the lizard-headed figurines.

They were made before the written records through which Mesopotamia becomes familiar to us. Some survived beside the dead. Others emerged from settlement deposits, broken and separated from the places in which they had first been used.

The clay remains. The names, stories and intentions have not come down with it.

The central question: were these figures images of the people who made them, representations of an altered or disguised appearance, or beings who belonged to a world their makers understood differently from ours?

THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES

Why does an infant share the same unfamiliar face? What was a figure doing beside a dead person’s hands? Continue into the excavations, the surviving objects and the explanations that have gathered around them.
